To stroll about Margaret Island is to take a walk back in time. Once you are familiar with this island’s centuries-old history, you are sure to find its monuments, sculptures, and ruins all the more impressive.
Dubbed “Budapest’s Central Park”, it was once a royal hunting ground, and was known for a time as ‘Rabbit Island’ for this reason. The island is dotted with huge sycamore trees, walkways, statues, and the ruins of a medieval monastery.
A water tower designated a UNESCO protected site stands tall in the middle of the island.
Celebrated Hungarian poet János Arany spent many hours under the oak trees here, and they feature in his poetry as well.
Hungarian author Antal Szerb wrote the following in his book, “A Martian’s Guide to Budapest”:
“Margaret Island. It is in this narrow park, where you can see the Danube sparkling both to the right and to the left, the flow of impermanence, between the almost too beautiful flowerbeds and amongst the lower and upper restaurants – this is where we go to be children and this is where we go to grow old.

The greatest poet of the Budapesters, János Arany, grew old here too.”
The park holds two swimming pool complexes, a padded jogging path, a petting zoo, an open-air theater, two musical fountains, several restaurants and bars and many secluded places for a bit of romance.
It really is an escape from the city, in the MIDDLE of the Danube River.
