The city of Budapest feels so ancient, that before you learn any better, you feel like it must have been just as it is for centuries. One sprawling, ancient city. But, in fact, the city of Budapest was officially created on 17 November 1873.

The current city is actually a composite from a merger of the three neighboring cities of Pest, Buda, and Óbuda (or Old Buda). Even later still, smaller towns on the outskirts of the original city were amalgamated into Greater Budapest in 1950.

Walking down from the citadel, you will probably run into this statue anthropomorphizing two parts of Budapest before they were joined together.
