In the 1980’s, there was a children’s puzzle toy that took the world by storm.
The Rubik’s Cube was invented in 1974 by Hungarian sculptor and professor of architecture Ernő Rubik. But this famous cube didn’t actually begin as a puzzle. Rubik’s initial purpose in creating this twisting cube, was solving the structural problem. He wanted to create a cube that could be twisted on all sides with all of the pieces moving independently, yet without the entire thing falling apart.
As he twisted his cube, testing the structural engineering, he was overjoyed that it worked. But then he wanted to get the cube back in to its original position, and it was only then that he realized he had created a puzzle.
The first batch was exported from Hungary in May 1980.
Tiny Sculpture creator, Mihály Kolodko, has immortalized this Hungarian invention with a tiny monument on the Buda side of the Danube. This Cube can’t be solved. It is stuck in place, and it taunts you to turn it.
Be on the look out for Kolodko’s Cube, and pay your respects to the toy that captivated the attention of children, age 7 to 70, all over the world. And still does.
