Vajdahunyad Castle isn’t just a castle. It’s an architectural homage to 21 different buildings, among them a church and a castle with ties to Dracula.
Despite its medieval look, this castle was built in 1896 as part of Hungary’s Millennial Celebration.
The castle was designed by Ignác Alpár to as a composite of many different styles. A showcase in one building, of many landmark buildings from different parts of the Kingdom of Hungary and from different time periods. Specifically, the Gothic Hunyadi Castle, also known as Corvin Castle, also known as Dracula’s Castle, in Transylvania.
The Romanesque Church of Jak, which has an exact replica of that church’s ornate carved portal.
And the Baroque Austro-Hungarian palace of Prince Paul Esterhazy I.
Originally, it was made from cardboard and wood. But it became so popular that it was rebuilt from stone and brick between 1904 and 1908. Today, it houses the Museum of Hungarian Agriculture, the biggest agricultural museum in Europe.
