The building, in which this Serbian kafana is located, was built in 1823.

It changed hands several times, but eventually Prince Miloš awarded it to his personal doctor as a thank you for his support during the Second Serbian Uprising.
Realizing its prime location, Ećim Toma soon converted the property into a cafe that became known around town as Tomina kafana, “Ećim Toma’s kafana”.
Then in 1892, a new owner, Ivan Pavlović’s wanted to change the name of the cafe.

Noting very famous landmark across the street, changed the name to Kod Saborne crkve (by the Saborna Church).
This almost caused the church authorities then to spontaneously combust.
How dare someone reference their church I the name of a cafe!
So, as a temporary solution, the tavern’s owner put a question mark over the name on the door.
It soon became the official name of the kafana.
Today, Znak Pitanja “?” is the oldest, still operational traditional tavern (kafana) in Belgrade, Serbia.
The building is nearly 200 years old and is now one of the city’s best-known landmarks.
Znak Pitanja “?” offers traditional Balkan cuisine and features starogradska (traditional Balkan) music.
